Alexander Stadium - Birmingham - RCDS

Alexander Stadium in Birmingham is one of the UK’s premier athletics venues. It was, for example, the host of the AAA trials for the Beijing Olympics and it is to be the US and Jamaican team’s UK training base before the 2012 Olympics.

The first part of an upgrade was the brand new 5,000 seat back straight stand which is to be built in time for the IAAF Diamond League meeting next year.

The two-tier stand is designed to reflect the summer aspect of athletics with its fabric facade and roof together with the open aspect to the track from the concourse.

The stand will also contain two floors of office space below the main concourse level.

RCDS modelled and detailed the terracing, vomitory stairs and walls, and external wall panels.

Working in conjunction with Killelea Steel and Creagh Concrete, the concrete and steel models were combined using the latest 3D software Tekla, this led to the construction phase of the project running with no clashes between the steel frame and the concrete elements.

The total tonnage of concrete on the project was approximately 1,650 Tonnes.
