RCDS(NI) Ltd: Advancing Prefabricated Rebar Cage Modelling at Hinkley Point C
RCDS(NI) Ltd is proud to have contributed to one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects Hinkley Point C nuclear power station by delivering advanced digital modelling of prefabricated rebar cages. Working in close collaboration with Bylor (a joint venture between Bouygues Travaux Publics and Laing O’Rourke) and engineering consultants Robert Bird Group, our team helped streamline reinforcement workflows for nuclear-grade construction.
🔧 Tekla Structures for Precision Modelling
Using Tekla Structures, RCDS(NI) Ltd developed highly detailed 3D models of prefabricated rebar cages. These models featured precise geometry, bar spacing, coupler placement, and embedded metadata including bar types, delivery zones, and installation sequences. This enriched data supported off-site fabrication and improved traceability across the supply chain.
🧠 Navisworks for Clash Detection and IFC Validation
Navisworks was used in validating IFC exports from Tekla, helping procurement teams receive clean, coordinated, and clash-free data for rebar ordering.
🤝 Collaborative Engineering Excellence
Through iterative coordination with Bylor and Robert Bird Group, RCDS(NI) Ltd optimised cage designs to suit complex geometries and site constraints. The prefabricated models were tailored for efficient lifting, placement, and connection while meeting stringent nuclear safety and quality standards.
🚀 Impact on Construction Efficiency
• Reduced on-site labour through prefabrication
• Improved schedule certainty via digital coordination
• Streamlined procurement with metadata-rich IFCs
• Enhanced quality assurance and traceability
📈 Setting a Benchmark in Digital Rebar Coordination
This project highlights RCDS(NI) Ltd’s leadership in BIM-driven reinforcement modelling. Our integration of Tekla Structures, Navisworks, and metadata workflows sets a new standard for reinforced concrete delivery in nuclear and civil engineering.
